About this event
Story writer and artist Peter Ursem is currently working on his collection of magical animal stories, Fabulous Fables. He will happily read you one of his short stories, in return for a quick doodle in the big fables sketch book…
There are only 4 more opportunities to visit Peter in his Launceston high street studio: 22 Church Street: On Wednesdays and Thursdays 20&21 July and 27&28 July, from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
As part of the Charles Causley Festival Peter will also read from his Fabulous Fables on Friday 29th July. Find Peter in the town square from between 11am and 12 noon, or between 2 and 4pm.
About the Artist
Petrus Ursem is a painter/printmaker, in particular of relief printmaking techniques (lino print, woodcut, wood engraving) and a writer. Having graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague in 1995, my artistic practice has been in the Netherlands (until 1998), in Dorset (until 2010) and in East Cornwall (since 2011), where I have my studio near Calstock and Gunnislake.
As a visual artist ‘landscape’ is an important theme in my work. I’m interested in the ‘spirit of place’. However, I also work on different subject matters such as, for example, a series of textworks, in which I explore the visual character of language and words. Key works/exhibitions in my artistic career include ‘Reflections, woodcuts of the river Stour’ (2001), ‘Intimate Space, Artist Face’ (Sherborne House, 2006), ‘Dorset Footprint’, solo exhibition at Dorset County Museum (2010) and ‘As the River Flows’, Plymouth (2017). I am a member of Make SouthWest and exhibit regularly with the Arborealists group.
As a writer I have published a trilogy for young adult readers, the first two parts of which were shortlisted for the Cornish Holyer-an-Gof awards. I have experience in facilitating and teaching workshops, curating exhibitions and managing arts projects.
This project is funded by the UK Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund. Cornwall Council has been chosen by Government as a Lead Authority for the fund and is responsible for monitoring the progress of projects funded through the UK Community Renewal Fund in Cornwall.
