About this event
Cyanotype is the photographic printing process discovered by Sir John Herschel, a polymath scientist, in 1842 as a means to reproduce muliple diagrams. It creates a cyan blue silhouelle when an object is placed on a reactive surface and developed in UV light – a blue print. Modern cyanotype processes include the use of digitally produced UV blocking negatives giving a more nuanced (tonal) image. Each cyanotype is unique as each print is handmade and some are hand tinted.
I find the process of making cyanotypes both challenging, immensely satifying and occassionally frustrating. I work in two ways. The traditional way, which was used by the 19th century Botanist Anna Atkins, who made cyanotypes from flowers and seaweed. I use leaves and flowers from my own garden to produce unque and vibrant cyanotypes on japanese paper. I also work with my photographs making a digital negative from which I then make a cyanotype contact print on art paper. In the summer I use the Cornish sunshine to expose my prints and during the winter months I make use of my UV light box.
For those visiting during Open Studios, you will be able to view my work in the gallery, visit my studio darkroom and then relax in the award winning gardens with view to Trencrom.
