Immersive Soundscapes from the Cornish Coast
Surrounded by Sound is a collection of 8 audio recordings taken at Gyllingvase (Gylly) & Grebe beaches in Falmouth, Cornwall in early 2019.
Originally recorded as part of the research for a live touring performance work called ‘In My Head’ – an extraordinary experience of ordinary, everyday sound explored through a personal experience of hearing loss by dancer & choreographer Emily Alden (Rosemary Lee/Passage for Par, WildWorks, Kneehigh, Cscape, Simon Birch), the Surrounded By Sound recordings now also hold special value as a record of life in these locations pre-pandemic.
Be transported to the beach as Emily walks, sits & dances along the shoreline, in amongst day to day life in each location, needing only a pair of headphones to listen & enjoy. Surrounded By Sound features a unique type of audio recording – binaural recordings – which gives the listener an immersive experience, a feeling of physical space around them. The listener can hear the waves lapping the sand directly to the right of them, birds squawking up above their heads, Emily dancing on pebbles in front of them.
Share the project with friends & family living in Cornwall & far afield. They are intended to be something fun to do & share in with others, a way to rekindle memories & enjoy the beaches we aren’t able to visit right now & be a way to escape through sound to Cornwall.
