About this event
The Chapel Street Music Festival: Closing concert.
Sunday June 5th at 7.00pm
The weekend’s Festival of music will close with a programme of English music which shows three quite different aspects of the English character.
Jonathan Dove’s new piano quintet is full of irresistibly infectious, toe-tapping rhythms and startling, colourful textures. Somewhere between jazz, pop, minimalism, blues and contemporary classical style, it defies description and beguiles listeners from all backgrounds.
In Finzi’s Five Bagatelles for clarinet and strings, we find a more traditionally lyrical bucolic melancholy, beautifully crafted and guaranteed to tug at the heartstrings of any English man or woman.
The programme, and the Festival, finishes with Elgar’s epic piano quintet.
Written when he was at the height of his powers, it covers a full range of emotions, with a slow movement of piercing beauty.
