Premiering a short video documentary about the Headland Riots in Newquay in 1897, probably the most violent crowd incident in Newquay’s history.

It begun through the loss of common land due to the building of large hotels on Newquay Headland. The hotel owners were roughed up, including the well-known Truro based architect Silvanus Trevail, and were pelted with a variety of objects. The Riot Act was read and the army called in to support the police. Told through the media of the time in their own words.

This is supported by an illustrated talk ‘Cornish Landscape and Monuments’ by Len Sheppard, coordinator of Newquay Museum. This talk was recently presented for the first time by Len at the Royal Cornwall Museum and considers aspects of Cornwall’s environmental heritage and takes in two tours throughout parts of Cornwall led by Len looking at heritage sites.

This event helps support Newquay Museum and Kowethas Ertach Kernow and the work they do in preserving and sharing Newquay and Cornish heritage.
