Learn to paint a portrait in oils with this four-day, studio-based course with artist Jon Doran

Held at Newlyn School of Art, this fantastic studio-based four-day course with artist Jon Doran provides all the building blocks for students to achieve a likeness of a portrait model with oil paint.

Suitable for beginners through to more experienced students, this course is taught mostly on a one-to-one basis, with Jon tailoring his tuition to each individual student and their level of previous experience. Two portrait models will be used at all times.

Over the four days, participants will learn how to accurately draw and analyse the shapes of the face, interpret light and shadow, create a full palette and assess tonal, colour temperature and edge relationships. The course culminates in the students creating an alla-prima (wet-on-wet) portrait study.

This intensive course is perfect for those who are interested in learning key skills in contemporary realism portraiture.
