About this event
The Salthouse Gallery is pleased to present Tide by Tide, a photographic exhibition by Martina Heintke, featuring images of naturally occurring sand patterns formed by the daily retreat of the tide.
Captured through a sustained, ritualized return to the shoreline, the photographs document ephemeral formations shaped by water and time. These delicate lines and textures – etched briefly into sand – exist only for a few hours before being erased by the sea and reformed anew. The work foregrounds subtlety over spectacle, offering a contemplative alternative to conventional representations of coastal shores.
Rather than focusing on dramatic seascapes, Tide by Tide turns attention to the aftermath of motion: the quiet moment when the water has gone and the shore holds its breath. The images reveal a visual language that feels at once abstract and deeply natural, echoing themes of impermanence, repetition, and presence.
The exhibition invites viewers to slow down and engage with forms that are typically unseen or disregarded. In doing so, it reflects on broader questions of time, care, and the quiet beauty of processes that unfold beyond human intention.
Tide by Tide will be on view at The Salthouse Gallery from Saturday, 18th April 2026 for one week. An opening reception will be held on at 6 pm on the 18th of April. The event is free and open to all.

Apart from the threshold step there are no obstacles to enter. There is a slightly raised level mid gallery, but this shouldn't present a problem for wheelchairs as I can assist.
