Free behind the scenes tours of Kresen Kernow for Heritage Open Days

For Heritage Open Days in September, come behind-the-scenes at Kresen Kernow and enjoy special access to our secure strongrooms, where over 1.5 million historic documents are looked after. Usually unseen by the public, this guided tour reveals how archives are stored and cared for, and offers a unique glimpse into Cornwall’s documentary heritage.

Following the tour, there will be an opportunity to view a curated selection of original documents, photographs and personal collections connected to this year’s Heritage Open Days theme, Everyday Histories. These include early underground mining photographs by JC Burrows, fishing and oyster harvesting traditions, women’s work during the Second World War, and insights into school meals and costs in the 1960s. You’ll also discover stories of community life through choirs and brass bands, material linked to Holman Brothers of Camborne, and Cornwall’s first female ambulance driver.

Dates and times:

• Saturday 12 September, 10-11.15am or 1.30-2.45pm (approximate finish time)
• Tuesday 15 September, 10-11.15am or 1.30-2.45pm (approximate finish time)
• Thursday 17 September, 10-11.15am or 1.30-2.45pm (approximate finish time)

Tours last approximately one hour and 15 minutes and are suitable for all ages (although most suitable for those over 8 years of age).

The tours have limited spaces, so please book your free ticket when booking opens on Monday 17 August at 8am.

Our building is accessible, but please do let us know if you have any mobility or access needs. The tours cover both the ground floor and first floor, and although we have lifts, they are not fire lifts. In the unlikely event of any emergency we have two fire refuges on the first floor, and stairs.
