About this event
Enjoy a day out with a difference, travelling by vintage buses & coaches across the West Cornwall peninsula, for free. The event hub is Penzance bus station and all trips go out and back. You can get off at the destinations and return on a later service.
You will be transported back in time to different eras with some 40 vehicles dating from 1947 right through to 2003. Many of them used to operate in Cornwall so the sights and sounds of bygone travel will be recreated for photographers and passengers alike.
Souvenir programmes provide all you need to plan your day with vehicles details, route information and timetables. They also include an illustrated article about the history since the first GWR Road Motors Helston to The Lizard service started 120 years ago. Another feature describes a preserved Truronian vehicle, now 20 years old, making its debut appearance since being restored to original colours. A special poem by Gray Lightfoot puts us in the mood to enjoy the day.
Souvenir programmes can be purchased in advance by post via the website or from Sullivan’s Diner by the Bus Station after Easter and will also be available on the day.
The event will start with a cavalcade through Penzance and along the Promenade from 09:30. Trips start at 10:00 and run throughout the day, the final service returning by 17:00.
There will be early feeder services into Penzance from St Ives and Camborne – details on the website.
The event is jointly organised by two registered educational charities (the Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust – TV&GWOT, and the Cornwall Bus Preservation Society – CBPS) who are committed to preserving vintage buses & coaches so the public have the opportunity to experience bygone travel and learn about the relevance to public transport today.
Both organisations will have stands at the event and visitors are welcome to come and find out more about the opportunities to get involved with the vehicle and archive preservation activities as volunteers.
Accessibility
Details
The Bus Station is a public space with good accessibility. Some of the preserved buses have low floor access so there are opportunities for everyone to enjoy a trip out. However, many of the privately owned vintage buses were constructed in an era when accessibility was not provided for, so regrettably some vehicles may not suit individual needs.
