About this event
Our latest pop-up exhibition, ‘Withy Lore’, is here! For centuries, withy pots – traditional crab or lobster traps, largely made from willow – were a common sight around the South West coast. Today, only a handful of withy pot makers remain, forming a vital connection to the past. Their skills, stories, knowledge and a rare collection of withy pots form the heart of the ‘Withy Lore’ pop-up exhibition.
The Withy Lore project explores the endangered craft of withy pot making, celebrating makers past and present and preserving its heritage for the future. A selection of the project’s discoveries are now on display at Kresen Kernow and some of the stories, artworks and project findings will be added to the KK collections next year.
Withy Lore is delivered in partnership with Storylines, who specialise in gathering and sharing stories, and heritage inspired artist Anna Pope, who has a personal connection to the craft. Together they have gathered stories and shared them in various creative forms to be shown within exhibition contexts to help raise awareness. These include oral history, film, photography, collage, illustration, print, salt water copper etchings and tools.
The ‘Withy Lore’ pop-up is open during our advertised opening hours, until the end of January 2026, but please do check our website for details of Christmas closing.
