About this event
Giving great scope into the imagination, the exhibition WONDERS UNTOLD sees a welcome return of the ever-inventive MARK HEARLD. Well-known for his inimitable collage paintings, he has decorated the frames of each image – mainly wild and domestic birds and animals – making each one a distinctive work of art.
The sea and its creatures, as well as maritime history, inspired the work of ALEX MALCOLMSON, a Shetlander and mixed media artist. His painted, carved and constructed shorebirds show an empathy with the essence of these creatures, whilst his ‘box works’ tell enigmatic stories of elements of maritime life.
Delicate in tone are a collection of watercolours and original prints by EMILY SUTTON.
Deceptively playful in appearance are TERRY SHONE’s ceramic figurines and flatbacks which hark back to Staffordshire-ware of the C19th. Slab-built and modelled forms, decorated with coloured slips and glazes are frequently re-worked over several firings with enamels and lustres. Terry’s unique stylisation of this historic genre has become increasingly popular among his many collectors.
Another ceramic artist who uses wild and domestic creatures as her subject is ROBINA JACK. Her beautifully painted images on platters and bowls have earned her an impressive following too – and link perfectly in the large main gallery with MARK HEARLD’s lively collages.
Closer to home are the tapestry-woven rugs by SUE MARSHALL from Lamorna. Sue’s Swedish origins are evident in her wonderful sense of colour and design.
Another local, albeit nationally recognised artist-craftsman, is the jeweller/silversmith GUY ROYLE. Essentially contemporary in style, albeit with echoes of a distant past, his jewellery shows the mark of a fine craftsman.
Outside in the sculpture gardens are unusual ‘totem’ constructions by ceramic artist DIANA BARRACLOUGH, together with HELEN NOCK’s carved and constructed slate sculptures of birds in flight – as well as her mosaic inlaid slate garden tables and bird-baths.
