Theatre in Cornwall
In Cornwall we have a wealth of fantastic theatre companies creating a huge range of theatre. From shows for families to parkour performance, from site specific to online theatre. Here is just a snapshot of what’s on offer.
1. Scary Little Girls
Scary Little Girls is a feminist production hub with a passion for stories that are historically or culturally excluded. They actively create jobs for women and are committed to the creative case for diversity. Look out for their Salon de la Vie Christmas Special in December.
2. Coppice Theatre
Coppice Theatre are a collective of artists from across Cornwall who specialise in creating engaging, entertaining storytelling shows for children. They love puppetry, animations, live music and telling fantastic stories. In December they will be performing Jack’s Frosty Stories 4 and Jack Frost’s Storytime.
3. Prodigal theatre and the Urban Playground Team
Prodigal make work that is epic within a small frame, ranging from intimate in-the-round storytelling through site-specific reworkings of Jacobean Tragedy to the UPG Team’s performance-parkour shows. They’re creating a new festival of outdoor performance in 2021.
4. ‘Owdyado Theatre
‘Owdyado Theatre make darkly comic, narrative-driven theatre influenced by cult TV shows like The Twilight Zone and Inside No.9 that tours the UK. Listen to their Twisted Tales audio plays via their website.
5. Kill the Cat
Kill The Cat is the award winning collaboration between theatre makers Dylan Frankland and Madeleine Allardice. Makers of bold interactive theatre that explores difficult social/ political issues such as mental health, loneliness and climate crisis fun and inventive ways.
6. Cousin Jack's
Cousin Jack’s aim is to inspire children and their families with stories of Cornwall. Last year the company toured to communities in the USA connected to Cornwall, and in 2021 they’ll be creating two brand-new productions. In the meantime, watch their virtual telling of Percy Pengelly and the Wibble Wobble via their website or watch a special Christmas screening of The Mousehole Cat.
7. Wildworks
Wildworks makes landscape theatre. They are rooted in Cornwall and have made work all over the world. The projects happen anywhere from large scale spectacular performances or small intimate artworks that grow out of their locations. Narrative is at the centre of their work.
8. Blystra Arts
Blystra Arts is a Newquay based performance and arts company who deliver and create unique events and performance work that are interactive, fun, accessible and designed to engage the whole community.
9. Near Ta
Near-ta Theatre create comic, fast-paced performance which has been delighting audiences of all ages since 2003. Their iconic cult Christmas show: Christmas. Time has been touring for over 10 years across the UK, bringing Christmas cheer to the masses. Look out for it in the Guide.
10. Miracle Theatre
Miracle has been touring original, inventive theatre across the UK since 1979. It is one of the South West’s most distinctive voices. In summer, Miracle pops-up in unexpected places: on beaches and cliff tops and in amphitheatres, gardens, castles.
