About this event
This is a very rare chance to hear Brahms’s exquisite gem for choir and orchestra, Nänie. It sets Schiller’s poem which laments the inevitability of death – “Auch das Schöne muss sterben” – even beauty must die. Like a miniature version of Brahms’ German Requiem, it presents a sublime vision of consolation.
In a celebration of Brahms’s lyrical talent, it is flanked by his warmest and most lyrical symphony, his second, a “late idyll”, and the earlier Variations on a St Anthony Chorale.
Written 3 years before he dared to emerge from behind the shadow of Beethoven to write a symphony, these 8 variations pack into a short space of time a dazzling display of virtuosity.
Featuring the St Endellion Easter Festival Orchestra and Chorus
Conductors David Watkin, Lucy Goddard
