About this event
PGS was founded in 1923, have been performing in Plymouth, the South-West, and further afield in Buxton Opera House, The Royal hall in Harrogate, both for the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, for almost 100 years. The original fellowship was set up to perform the operettas of W.S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, so popular in their time. In 2009, PGS expanded their repertoire and staged their first non-G & S operetta, “The Merry Widow”.
Since then, the company have performed “My Fair Lady”, “Carmen”, “Chess”, “Spamalot” and “Evita”. Recognised by NODA, the company holds the current award for “Best Company Singing” for “Evita” 2019.
A certain global happening halted our 2020 production of “The Pirates of Penzance”, and prevented us from singing together for 18 months.
We are delighted to be back, and our concert programme for “ Christmas at the Musicals Returns” is a celebration of feel-good music from “ Sweet Charity”, “ Wicked”, “ Martin Guerre”, “ Ragtime”, with a sprinkling of the well-loved “ Pirates”. We will include a preview of our forthcoming 2022 South-West premiere of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, a tour de force of a modern musical, telling Victor Hugo’s epic tale of Quasimodo.
The second half of our programme is sure to get you in the mood for a sparkling Christmas, with traditional carols, modern classics and well-loved songs. We are sure that you will enjoy this magical evening and wish you all a very happy Christmas.
