About this event
8 wonderful concerts in 9 days, the 51st St Endellion Easter Festival of classical music takes place from March 31st to April 7th 2024 in St Endellion, Port Isaac PL29 3TP. Exceptional music making in a very special setting, features chamber orchestra and chorus, with international soloists and conductors.
The festival opens with a lyrical chamber concert on Sunday 31st March featuring works by Schumann, Debussy, Mendelssohn commencing with Janáček’s dynamic violin sonata.
A second chamber concert on Tuesday 2nd April features a wealth of works from Neoclassical to Classical, performed by Leaders Paul Barritt & Ioana Petcu-Colan and members of the Festival Orchestra, including Royal Harpist Alis Huws, with Claire Sutton Williams and Ana Manastireanu.
A very special late-night candlelit treat on Tuesday is curated and performed by Mark Padmore CBE and friends.
Alas sold out (returns only): Wednesday’s concert is a tribute to festival founder Founder Fran Hickox MBE. It opens with Bach’s intensely moving Ich habe genug, followed by Haydn’s cello concerto in the first half. The chorus and orchestra perform Mozart’s powerful Requiem in the second half.
The St Kew lunchtime concert this year takes place on Thursday 4th April and is curated and performed by Royal Harpist Alis Huws. This concert will also feature a new work, commissioned by the Easter Festival, for tenor and harp, by composer Alice Beckwith.
Haydn’s Creation is the chosen oratorio work this year and is performed twice, on both Friday 5th and Sunday 7th April. Conducted by David Watkin with semi-staged direction by Donna Stirrup, joining the Festival Chorus and Orchestra are international soloists Louise Alder, Mark Padmore and Matthew Brook.
Saturday 6th April features a wonderful evening of Brahms. His rarely performed Nänie for chorus and orchestra, is followed by Brahms’ characterful Haydn variations, and the evening concludes with Brahms’ “idyllic” much-loved Second Symphony.
