Marina Magic on a Plate: Dining at UpperDeck

Nestled along the waters of Falmouth Marina, UpperDeck stands out as a true hidden gem that blends waterfront dining with a lively, welcoming spirit. Last month, Cornwall 365 was delighted to receive an invitation to experience a delectable three-course dinner. Read on to find out our thoughts!

Upon my arrival at the UpperDeck, I made my way to the restaurant’s glass exterior and was warmly greeted by the friendly waitress. She showed me to a lovely window table overlooking the boats bobbing in their slips. The interior at UpperDeck strikes just the right balance between contemporary style and cosy comfort.

With minimalist decor and marine-inspired accents create a fresh, coastal vibe. But the soft lighting and twinkling fairy lights strung overhead provide an inviting, relaxing warmth. Before my meal, I decided to start my evening on UpperDeck’s patio, sipping a cosmopolitan and watching the sunset reflect in the marina waters.

When it was time for dinner, I was shown to my table in the charming indoor space. My table was set with flickering candles, and the ambience prepared the scene for the culinary delights to come.

As I looked over the menu, I was impressed by the wide array of high-quality, locally sourced options catering to various tastes and budgets. From fresh catches like Sole and Hake to succulent steaks, flavourful soups and indulgent pizzas, as well as a selection of specials that change from week to week. I was assured that UpperDeck takes great care in sourcing the freshest ingredients from local providers. Our server even provided excellent wine pairing recommendations to complement the menu’s different flavours and elevate our dining experience.

To start, my guest and I savoured the charred leeks and the melt-in-your-mouth braised beef cheek served atop creamy parley mash. For my main course, I chose the sirloin steak. The beef was topped with crispy onion rings and a punchy peppercorn sauce, served alongside a fresh salad and crispy fries.

My guest opted for one of the evening’s special offerings – the pan-seared skate wing. Given UpperDeck’s reputation as one of Falmouth’s top seafood restaurants, we felt it essential to sample one of their fish dishes! The wing was cooked perfectly and flaked apart beautifully. This dish was a great example of UpperDeck’s commitment to using the finest fresh-off-the-boat ingredients.

To finish, I tried the selection of bite-sized sweet treats. It was the ideal sweet ending to a wonderful meal. From the cosy setting to the stellar service and locally sourced food, UpperDeck definitely exceeded my expectations. I will certainly be returning to this Falmouth gem to sample more of their delicious food paired with lovely views of the harbour.

While the cuisine is certainly a major draw, UpperDeck is more than just a restaurant. It’s a vibrant hub that hosts a wide array of events and festivities throughout the year. Music lovers can groove to local bands every first Friday for their monthly Band Night or check out up-and-coming student talent during the weekly Student Band Nights and Open Mic events. Families flock here for the indulgent Sunday roasts (widely renowned as one of the best in Falmouth).

UpperDeck also celebrates special occasions and seasons with unique celebratory menus and offerings like Mother’s Day brunch, Valentine’s set menu, Summer Alfresco dining and cosy Christmas feasts. To stay up-to-date on their full lineup of happenings, be sure to follow them on social media and check their website.
