About this event
A Trio of Printmakers brings together for the first time three Penwith based artist printmakers, each inspired by different aspects of the wild coast and moor landscapes in which they live. The exhibition shines a spotlight on contemporary printmaking in Cornwall, highlighting the artists’ individual styles and choice of imagery, whilst showing an insight into their knowledge and expertise of a wide range of techniques belonging to an age-old craft.
Sara Bevan was born in Walsall in 1967 and studied at Liverpool Polytechnic gaining a BA (Hons) Degree in Fashion and Textiles, specialising in Printed Textiles. She now lives and works in Sennen near Lands End, specialising in printmaking and painting. Sara makes painterly, unique monoprints, often monochrome, depicting the starkness of Cornish natural icons such as gorse hedges, farm tracks and birds on telephone wires stretching across the moors.
Graham Black moved to Cornwall after a long career as an art director in London to rekindle his love of printmaking. His specialism is silkscreen printing focussing on the myriad textural complexities, forms and shapes of the ancient granite rocks and cliffs that dominate Land’s End where he lives. Graham exquisitely explores the possibilities of multiple overlays and colours to give depth and resonance to a process more known for creating flat imagery.
Gillian Cooper studied Art in Camberwell and Bristol, before moving to Cornwall in 1999. Gillian makes monoprints, collographs and etchings exploring the overlooked in the Cornish landscape; wild flowers, birds and their nests. These small to large scale works with their tactile, gestural hand-made marks, evidence her other specialisms in drawing and sculpture.
Sara Bevan and Graham Black exhibit with Cornwall Contemporary Crafts Association and all three show locally and nationally and are Associate Members of the Penwith Society of Artists, showing in the Penwith Gallery.
