My name is Amala and I am an award winning stained glass artist based in Porthtowan.
I have always admired traditional crafts, so in 2019 I jumped at the chance to attend a taster workshop in stained glass. From the moment I started, i fell completely in love with the craft and it has commandeered my life ever since.
In 2021 I won the Ashton Hill award from the Worshipful company of glaziers and painters of glass. This allowed me to spend 10 weeks training in the UK’s most prestigious architectural and conservation studios, learning about conservation, design, structural integrity, instillation, kiln fired painting and much more. The studios i worked in were, Holy Well Glass in Somerset, Barley studio in York, and a 6 day masterclass in glass painting, with renowned glass artist Derek Hunt.
My studio is based on an eco park that is nestled on the north coast of Cornwall, overlooking Porthtowan’s valley. I’m always inspired by the epic landscapes and beautiful wildlife which I try to replicate in my work. Where possible i use natural or recycled materials, from the fused glass fern bowls, to the ethically sourced butterfly pendants.
I teach regular workshops and ongoing tuition, which i thoroughly enjoy. To pass on what knowledge I have to others is a total honour. Having previously worked in the mental health sector for over 10 years, I am passionate about creating an all inclusive and supportive environment to promote maintaining a healthy well-being through being creative.
My favourite techniques to incorporate into my own work are hand engraving, fusing, kiln fired painting and enamelling.
