About this event
After lengthy lockdowns, Cornwall has experienced a record-breaking season – with visitors from far and wide enjoying the beaches, cliff walks and watersports. ‘Every visitor a happy visitor’? Or are they?
Intrigued by this question, Camidge & Stringer set to work developing their new show Wish We Weren’t Here. ‘No stone was left unturned during our in-depth research,’ explained theatre-maker Jak Stringer. ‘We even used Wikipedia!’
Sub-titled ‘Disappointed Literary Visitors 1820 – 1917,’ the show is set in a West Cornwall tourist information office. It is spring 2023, and staff members – manager Linda and assistant manager Jak – will swop their lockdown experiences… and explore the cold case files buried in the archives.
Here lurk the stories of famous, and infamous, past visitors to the area.
Will George Eliot ever make it to the Isles of Scilly?
Has D H Lawrence arrived too soon to enjoy multi-cultural Cornwall?
Can Mrs Piozzi cope when her ‘handsome beau’ is 200 long miles away?
Not forgetting the plague of hippies that descended in the 1960s to the dismay of many residents….
Camidge & Stringer have previously presented a variety of shows based on real-life local history, and have been described in the press as ‘a wonderful double-act, who combine humour and fact-finding to bring true stories to life… laughs a-plenty.’ Although it has moments of pathos, the new show is mostly light-hearted, and blends fact-based material with music, film and nostalgic images.
The show premiered at the St Ives September Festival 2021, where it sold out and was described as: ‘a brilliant show.’
