About this event
Kitty is a textile artist who thrives working with colour and pattern. She graduated in 2021, with a BA in Textile Design specialising in woven textiles at Chelsea College Of Art, UAL. In her second year she was nominated and studied at Tama Arts University in Tokyo, Japan. Japan is where she learnt and became fixated with weaving.
Since graduating she completed an internship with the Liverpool weaving company and co founded Contemporary Hempery. Contemporary Hempery is a field to fabric project on a mission to revive the hemp textile industry, here in the UK. Kitty grows flax and hemp and her own natural dyes.
This year for Open Studios she will be exhibiting and demonstrating textile practices from her research trip in Southeast Asia. She has recently spent 5 months there researching traditional textiles, working with the hill tribes and learning backstrap weaving. Her trip had a big focus on hemp, researching and visiting the Hmong hill tribes who are known for growing hemp and are still keeping this tradition alive. She also worked with women from the Karen hill tribe learning backstrap weaving, which will be on display at the exhibition.
