About this event
Designed for mixed-ability groups of beginners, amateurs, undergraduates, teachers and professionals this course aims to provide a disciplined and creative environment where students can learn solid, practical skills, and raise their own standards in both the quality and aesthetic integrity of their finished work.
Novices will receive a comprehensive introduction to the basic principles and techniques of the craft, and others, a thorough review of their existing skills before progressing onto new challenges.
The course content varies, but in general focuses on the generic forms and techniques – cylinders, bellies, bowls and plates, lips, handles and lids etc. There are regular demonstrations throughout the week. Each student has their own wheel, receives plenty of individual attention and is encouraged to pursue their own agenda.
Taught by life-long potter and teacher Richard Phethean, there will be some possibility of experimenting with slip decoration on the final day. There will be an abundant supply of prepared red earthenware clay, but there is stoneware clay available if you prefer to use it.
There is no kiln firing during the week, this is an intensive, making and refining block. Students may take unfired work home @ £1 per kg, but are encouraged to be selective. Come to work hard and improve your skills dramatically.
There is a bursary place for a 16-21 year old on each short course in 2023/2024, free or reduced depending on location and personal circumstances. Please email for more details.
Courses begin at 9am on a Monday morning for a welcome and orientation with coffee and pastries. Daily untutored studio time: 9-9.30am, 5.30-7pm. Hearty lunch and refreshments are provided each day.
