2 Day Naked Raku Ceramics Course: Saturdays 22nd & 29th July
10.30am – 4.30pm
Discover the joy of Naked Raku Ceramics as seen on the Great Pottery Throwdown…don’t worry you’ll be fully clothed!
This 2 day course is an exclusive opportunity to join Catherine Lucktaylor in her large rural studio near Penzance, Cornwall. With over 30 years experience of Raku fired ceramics, Catherine is a Master Artisan as selected by the Michelangelo Homer Faber Guide.
Naked or Slip-resist Raku is a beautiful specialist technique with gorgeous results. It’s an advanced Raku technique, but Catherine can help you get fabulous results even if you’ve never done any Raku before.
Naked Raku is a way of glazing a burnished pot. First by applying a resist slip followed by a crackle glaze. When the red hot pot is taken from the kiln you can hear the glaze crackling. Once the pot has been smoked in sawdust it’s taken out and the glaze is peeled off the smooth surface of the pot.
Day 1: you will hand build a selection of small pots and bowls in the morning, which will dry to leather hard before you burnish them to a smooth sheen.
Day 2: in the morning you will mask out your designs with a variety of techniques then cover your pots with the resist slip and resist glaze, before Raku firing in the outdoor kiln.
You will learn lots of tips to help you get the best results including how to create the perfect burnished surface on your pots. You’ll be guided step by step throughout the process and will leave with beautiful pots to treasure at the end of the course.
The day is from 10.30am – 4.30pm and includes a light lunch, cake and a selection of teas and fresh coffee.
This course is an inspiring and fun-filled 2 days of creativity and community.
By the end of the course you will have the knowledge and confidence to achieve great results with the Naked Raku firing technique.
Minimum of 3 and maximum of 8 participants.
