About this event
Kookaburra Studio’s combine the work places of landscape painter Paul Lewin and environmental textile atist Charlie Lewin. Paul’s newly completed studio is a wonderful space in which to appreciate the work of an artist who captures the extraordinary geography of the West Penwith peninsular through his paintings and sound installations.
From “Zawn” by Paul Gough, 2016 –
“Paul Lewin has painted a defining portrait of the near seas and coastal edges around West Penwith. He has drawn a continuous line along the south-west coast path from Penzance to Zennor, from Pendeen Watch to St Ives. He has painted places where few of us knew places existed. His ability to depict the sparkling iridescence of a late- afternoon sun on becalmed water seen from the vert-iginous slopes of his barren promontory is unparalleled in contemporary landscape painting in Britain. His work conveys an extraordinary force of emotion. He has mastered the art of seizing ‘the vertical hold’.
Deeply attuned to the rugged morphology of the peninsula he never overlooks its tough industrial history. Perched on his open-air studio, on the ferny turf that masks the grim toil hundreds of feet underneath, Lewin rarely forgets the emotional potency of this deeply mined land. His paintings capture its rich variety, but also some-thing of its terrible beauty.
Albert Camus wrote that a man’s work is ‘nothing but a slow trek to rediscover through the detours of art, those two or three great and simple images in whose presence his heart first opened. Here, in this wind scoured head-land, having trekked far and wide, Lewin has opened his senses, and at times his heart, to the genus loci – the spirit of place – of this, the final peninsula”
