Scything Workshop

1-Day Scything Workshop led by Tom Waters at Bosavern Community Farm

The scythe is generally considered to be the best way of managing small to medium sized areas of land. It has many benefits on biodiversity:
• It allows you maintain some ‘wildness’ to your land
• Provides good exercise
• Is kind to nature
• Is free from fossil fuels
• Is the best way to mow longer growth – ideal for managing wildflower meadows.
This course is ideal for anyone who wants to learn a new way of managing land or has grown tired of electric or fuel powered tools.
Scything course programme
• Introductions
• Set up of the scythe for the user
• Demo and practicing motions/techniques
• Break for tea/coffee
• Scything of an easy area
• Progress onto varied vegetation
• Lunch
• Resume with tutored scything activities
• Finish the day with peening for those who have their own or which to buy their own scythe
The course takes place at Bosavern Farm on the 15th of June at 9:30AM, and the cost is £80.
Please wear sturdy footwear (walking boots for example), full waterproofs if wet, trousers/ long sleeved tops to protect from the sun and insect bites, a sun hat, and to bring SPF. Participants will also need to bring their own lunch and a water bottle (drinkable water available on site). Tea, Coffee and biscuits will be available at a designated break time.
