About this event
Skata-likes were formed back in 2018, just before the Covid pandemic, and that happened when band leader Derek had a chance to meet with a former work colleague, Fiona Hoskin. She was a local singer who had been to London a few times to record jingles for a local supermarket. It was just before this that Derek had been asked to play with the World Famous Skatalites at Tunes in the Dunes, which gave Derek the motivation to form his own band; a few phone calls later, the band was formed, with Fiona as lead singer, Bass / Drums / lead Guitar / Sax / Trombone / & Trumpet,
The band will take you on a journey from Trojan Sound and Studio One Rocksteady to Two-Tone & Caribbean vibes. The band loves playing Ska & Reggae, putting their own spin on many of the songs right back to the 1960s and up, from people that were involved in the early days of The Skatalites, with the likes of Tommy McCook / Rico Rodriguez / Don Drummond, and vocals by Doreen Shaffer, mixed with some great Ska songs.
The Band has become a well-known local band in Cornwall. Last year, 2023, was really their very first full season after all the troubles of COVID-19. 2024 is already building to be a great season, with the band playing the length and breadth of the County.
The band lineup:
Fiona Hoskin – Vocals / Derek Johnston – Trombone / Dave Johnston – Sax / Chris Balmforth – Bass
Rob Bunt – Guitar / Issy Goldsworthy – Keyboard / Mike Webb – Drums.
