Sophie Velzian Artist - Open Studios

Sophie is in the Helford Artists Collective and works in oil & cold wax to create coastal, flower and abstract paintings in her Helford River studio.

Sophie studied at the Slade School of Art, and in recent years achieved her lifelong dream to live by the sea and moved to Cornwall close to Falmouth and the Helford River. From her home studio, her passion is painting the Cornish coast and plants in oils and cold wax, capturing the different moods of the coastal scenery and every changing light. Her work features coastal scenes, plus abstracts and abstract flowers inspired by her Helford surroundings.

This is her second year of Open Studios, and in 2023 she became a full time artist, and has been part of a number of successful exhibitions in Cornwall, including Coast Colour Canvas, Port Navas, Tolmen Centre and the Prime Women Artists Group Show. Her goal is to capture the soul and spirit of where she lives and paints, and the emotional connection with these precious places.

Sophie is also one of the founding members of the Helford Artists Collective, a small group of artists who live and work by the Helford River across a variety of mediums, all of whom will be participating in Open Studios this year, forming a short circuit ideal for visiting within the same day. Also in the area within walking distance for visitors are the fabulous Trebah and Glendurgan Gardens, the Helford River and its swimming beaches, Budock Vean Hotel and the Ferryboat Inn.
