About this event
Tom’s Midnight Garden
adapted by David Wood from the novel by Philippa Pearce
a Minack Theatre production
When his younger brother catches measles, ten-year-old Tom is sent away to quarantine at his uncle and aunt’s house near Ely. It’s dull, not being allowed out of their stuffy flat and there isn’t even a garden to play in. Tom hates being cooped up indoors. But everything changes one midnight, when the big grandfather clock in hall below strikes thirteen and Tom finds himself in a very different world.
Philippa Pearce’s enchanting tale of time and the power of memory has captivated readers for seventy years. David Wood’s loving adaptation of this classic has introduced it to new generations of children with all the magic of the original story.
Reviews of the original production
“This is the children’s novel closest to my heart, and my relief and joy at how it has been shaped for the stage can hardly be exaggerated … truly a show to watch with delight and remember in gratitude.”
The Times
“This haunting adaptation by dramatist David Wood accords Philippa Pearce’s timeless classic the respect it deserves …”
