In this year’s MA Show, Unbound, we meet work that journeys through madness, that converses with loss and elemental magic, that knowingly opens the door to unease and monstrosity. If there are shadows moving through this work though, there’s far more besides: the setting- loose at work here includes many and diverse species of gladness, irreverent humour and play, reminding us that no predicament is ever one thing only and there are as many ways to negotiate any of them as there are of us.
A recurrent theme is the background noise of ecological loss, but here in Unbound, all such matters are opened out with unhurried quizzical attention, with ways of looking and listening that entangle their darker notes in celebration, fragility, and laughter. The work we encounter here affirms an endlessly shifting mixture of identities and heritages, and the ultimate futility of attempts – actual and internalised – to police our imaginations. If anything’s certain here, it’s the unbounded liberative power of attention, image and song. We hope that, like us, you come away from this work inspired by its witness to this indomitable spirit. The MA Illustration: Authorial Practice team is delighted to present Unbound, our end-of-year graduating exhibition for 2022. Welcome!
