About this event
Few stories of exploration are as dramatic as two expeditions to Antarctica in the early 20th century. This multi-media talk will highlight three famous explorers: Scott, Amundsen and Shackleton.
Scott, Amundsen – The Race to the Pole tells of the early attempts to get to the South Pole – the Discovery and Nimrod expeditions, focusing on the 1910-11 expeditions ending in tragedy and triumph. Contemporary images provide a vivid record of this frozen world.
Shackleton’s Endurance Expedition – A Photographic Odyssey will highlight Shackleton’s expedition south in 1914, when his ship was crushed in the pack ice. Frank Hurley, the expedition’s official photographer, captured one of the greatest survival stories in polar history.
Born on the Isles of Scilly, Mark Cottle has developed an impressive career in teaching and lecturing. He knows how to bring history to life, captivating audiences all over the world.
Holding over 70,000 books, as well as archives and a rich photographic collection, Morrab Library, est. 1818, the only independent library in Cornwall, are delighted to be hosting this event. Come and visit us soon.
