About this event
Abandoned Beautyis an exhibition of infrared photos taken of Cornwall’s magnificent mining heritage. I spent six months walking and cycling around the glorious, sometimes surreal, and sometimes desolate Cornish landscape photographing engine houses and anything abandoned, with an infrared camera.
Infrared photography allows a glimpse into an invisible world as the human eye cannot see infrared light but a converted camera can. Using an infrared camera allows the invisible light spectrum to magically be seen. Depending on the filter used, the effect can be ghostly and haunting, or garish and surreal. I love both.
Infrared (which doesn’t have to be red with digital photography!) pictures work best when there’s a contrast of man-made and natural elements. In particular, the chlorophyll (green pigment) in plants and trees reflects infrared, whilst man-made materials don’t. Hence Cornwall’s landscapes, dotted with tumbling down engine houses, were an inspiration for me using the technique.
I’m proud to have my photos displayed at the Red River cafe in Heartlands, Pool, which was once the centre for mining in Cornwall, and one of the wealthiest places in the world.
My infrared photos have been featured in Cornwall Today magazine. I self-produced the book Welcome to St. Decay, which is on sale in the Red River cafe. The exhibition is free but all photography is for sale.
