This ancient stannary and market town is located approximately 12 miles east of Bodmin and sits at the head of the stunning Looe Valley. Tthe centre of Liskeard is rich with Victorian architecture, including the magnificent Stuart House on the Parade, which is now used as a venue for heritage, arts and community events.
One of the biggest events on Liskeard’s calendar is the annual Carnival Week in late June. With a diverse programme of performances, processions, quiz nights and art competitions, the town comes alive and offers plenty to see for adults and kids alike.
In July, the Liskeard & District Agricultural Show in Merrymeet offers locals and visitors the chance to watch as various animals compete for victory in their respective classes. With falconry displays, classic cars and a large produce marquee to explore, this accessible event puts on a free shuttle bus from Liskeard and Callington, as well as offering ample on-site parking.
The Liskerett Centre on Varley Lane regularly plays host to touring companies, offering vibrant and engaging live theatre (including performances organised in conjunction with Carn to Cove, Cornwall’s rural performing arts scheme), and also features an on-site cafe serving up delicious vegetarian food during the week, complete with local artists’ work adorning the walls (available to purchase).
And finally, a stay in or near Liskeard isn’t complete without descending into the magical underground world of Carnglaze Caverns. This all-weather attraction is affiliated to the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site and offers self-guided tours through the caverns, ending at a magnificent underground lake with crystal-clear waters.
