Founded by Canadian filmmaker Marty Gross, The Mingei Film Archive is an ongoing project to restore, enhance and preserve films that document the history of Japan’s Mingei Movement and its ongoing legacy in the world of contemporary ceramics.
This project originated in 1975 when Bernard Leach gave Marty Gross the films he had made in Japan, Korea and Manchuria during 1934-35, along with several significant 16mm films he had collected over his long career.
As part of the Leach Pottery centenary celebrations, Marty has gifted free public access to Working at the Leach Pottery 1970 (edited from outtakes of The Art of the Potter) until 15th June 2020. With narration by potter John Bedding who joined the Leach Pottery in 1967, this unique film follows the stages of pottery-making at the Leach Pottery, the Leach wheel, climbing kiln, and those who worked at the pottery in 1970. Featuring potters Bill Marshall, Shigeyoshi Ichino, Trevor Corser, Jeff Oestreich, Alan Brough and glazer Judy Gardner, with a brief appearance of Janet and Bernard Leach.
