About this event
Underworld is a project by Shallal Studios artists exploring bats and seaweed. Over eight months between September 2021 – August 2022, 50 artists and 70 school children researched and developed work through a series of workshops that explored Cornwall’s natural world – low beneath the surface of the sea and high into the night sky. The multi-sensory project was led by the artists’ research, coming together through an exhibition at Kresen Kernow, June 7th – 22nd June 2022.
Many thanks to Arts Council England, Awards for All, The RTR Fund and FEAST for supporting this project.
Accessibility
Details
"Kresen Kernow is fully wheelchair and pushchair accessible, with lifts to all levels and automatic main entrance doors. Accessible toilets are available on both floors (left hand sided on the ground floor, right hand sided on the first floor), with a fully-equipped Changing Places toilet also available on the ground floor. (The bench in the Changing Places toilet is 600mm wide.) Separate baby changing facilities are also available on the ground floor. There are two main entrances to the building. If you are arriving by vehicle, there are six accessible parking spaces at the Tesco side of the building and a level entrance into the building. If you are arriving on foot or wheels, from Redruth town centre, the closest entrance is at the end of the public path which runs through the old brewery site, from Chapel Street to Kresen Kernow. Please do note that when using this entrance, you will arrive at the top of a short flight of steps, but there is a lift immediately to your right. The floor in our reception area is a mix of old granite and new oak, so there are a few slightly uneven areas. There are also a number of dark grey pillars in this area, some of which have large bases at floor level. Three of our rooms have glass walls, with grey motifs on them. We are working on improving the contrast of them. A wheelchair is available to borrow for your visit, please ask at the reception desk. Mobility scooters are welcome in the building and parking for them is available near the car park. Different types of seating are available throughout the building, some chairs with arms, some without, some on wheels and some which are height adjustable. We also have some adjustable height desks in both the Archive and Library. In the event of a fire, we have two refuge points on the first floor. Assistance dogs are welcome at Kresen Kernow. There is public space outside the building for exercising dogs, and we have a spare water bowl and dog poo bags at the reception desk should you need them. Our general leaflet and how-to guides are also available in large print, in a number of colours. Please ask any of our team if you would like to have copies. Hearing loops are available on the ground floor reception desk, on the Archive room enquiry desk and in our training room. A portable device is also available. Please ensure your hearing aid is turned to the T position to access these. Sensory Activity levels at Kresen Kernow can vary on a daily basis but we are often quieter later in the day (after 3pm). Our Kosel room, on the first floor, is available for anyone needing some peace and quiet. We offer a wide range of learning activities which might affect how busy the building is on a daily basis. All public events are advertised on our What’s on pages. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have a query about visiting on a specific day. Our Social Story will be available here soon. Our staff are trained in offering additional support and are aware of the Sunflower Scheme. We work closely with disAbility Cornwall & Isles of Scilly as we want to ensure we are as accessible as possible. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any queries or concerns, or you think there is something we have missed."
